crazy that today I opened instagram and looked at polaroid ig story and saw that sx-70 film is back in stock and now in the evening this is the video recommended by YT 😀
Sorry , late to the party. Just to confirm, you can now use new 600 film in an sx-70 camera without needing a ND filter? thx.
I 600 and I-type converted my SX-70 sonar camera with a brand new pcb with full manual control. The I type conversion part is 2 external aaa sized 3.7v lithium(not regular AAA batteries) batteries. Full manual control through an app and or a dongle for manual control.
Since the folding SX-70 is a slower camera in its unmodified state I find it fun to see what I can get away with with just the light source in my house. In these situations the light sources are usually very close to the subject. One year I grabbed the Santa Claus figurine hung some Christmas lights behind him and then I put a green light bulb in one of those clip lamps and shine down on the figures face. I also used a stuffed dog in a Santa hat. I think I went up on the exposure compensation wheel to lighten it a little bit I figured in the lights would want to trick the light meter in the making it darker. The results were very good I got something that was reminiscent of a 1980s Christmas commercial as far as the lighting was concerned.
If its the same chemicals why is a diferent iso?
Thanks. I will just get a filter then and use the 600 film. Real shame though.
I will say that the 600 B&W film is great.
There is an American Experience episode on Polaroid history called Mr. Polaroid https://youtu.be/2k2XVoJDS_0?si=sjGg6hi3J8_VSYc5 they talk about the SX-70. Have you seen it?
This is actually the only thing that makes sense. Polaroid today is a tiny company compared to what the "original" Polaroid was. They now have only one factory. It totally make sense for the SX-70 film to be the sane as the 600/i-Type.
My guess is that the original SX-70 film died with the discontinuation in 2008, and that modern SX-70 film always has been 600 film with a built-in chemical ND filter.
This isn’t a mystery or controversy, it has been well known for years… however, it is important to note that you still need to use SX-70 film in unmodified SX-70 cameras (or add an ND filter gel) to avoid overexposure. And if modding the SX-70, one might as well add a battery to shoot the even cheaper i-type
Time Zero + SX-70 was the best combo. RIP.
The manipulation you show in the video could only be done with Time Zero film which hasn’t been made since the original Polaroid company discontinued it
Quick question for the community here, while the chemistry and emulsion are identical between 70/600 do you think that built in filter has any impact/effect on longevity of the image after being shot? Could it make it more or less durable overtime, image quality wise, like does it age any differently once developed? I know black vinyl used in records is said to be less prone to warping overtime due to the carbon in the chemistry of the vinyl. Just wondering, if anyone has any insight I'd appreciate it. Great video Chris.
intresting, i bought an sx70 at a thrift store for 5 bucks, needs some work but functions good enough to give me washed out images on 600 film (ironically makes it look like old 70s photos that faded lol). knowing its altered 600, im just going to invest in an nd filter system for the lens and be happy i can easily get 600 film. plus i can remove the nd filter for a wider range if i need it
At 01:05, you said ISO and ASA are similar, which is incorrect but partly true. ISO differs from ASA in that you have to incorporate DIN (the German unit for measuring film sensitivity). For example, a film roll with an ASA of 100 will have an ISO of 100/21°, but for convenience, they now usually just write ISO 100
Keep in mind… an UNconverted SX-70 does a fine job with 600 film… outside, at night, with no flash. Experimenting with the exposure dial may be needed.
I personally just use 600 film with an ND over the pack!
I own three sx-70s. I have a black one, a white one, and an original silver one from the early 70's I love them all but I am a bit bummed they did away with sx-70 film but I'm glad they're still around at least and making some form of film that still works!
Maybe I'm just unlucky, but everytime I make a concerted effort to buy SX70 film, it's out of stock
I'm not helping by now defaulting to 600, but I'm gonna hope that new factory means boosted SX70 production
I am glad that they made it work for SX-70 cameras, I have some camera that I love that aren't 600 converted and am cool with the low ASA no matter how they got there!!! I still miss Spectra film!!!
Just imagine taking pictures of a street fighter cosplayer and drawing in the ha do ken effect! It's fun!
Ironic the sx70 film is out of stock on Polaroids website with the exception of the Paul Giambarba edition
Still have 4 packs from 2018 in my fridge.
Now I wanna know…
confused by the overall message, can i use 600 film in my sx-70 without an ND filter now with this updated 600 film?
So long story short, do I need to convert my SX70? I've been struggling to do it for a while, but it seems to be the best option!, and If someone know what is the best service of conversion in USA!
I'm just too broke to get the SX-70 converted😭😭😭
I have a few Spectra cameras, and that was definitely the most interesting line of their cameras, lots of fun and weird concepts, but at the time Impossible Project/now Polaroid said they’d decided to stop making Spectra film was due to the fact their film was thicker than the originals (8 vs 10 shots in a pack) that it would often jam the sometimes weaker motors in some of the cheaper (later) Spectra models, and they were tired of all the complaints. They said they’d keep working on it, but finally gave up. Rest in peace Spectra indeed…
I just love instant film. Don't really care what they make it from lmao.
To do the film manipulation it has to be time zero film… that died in 2008,,,modern film isn’t the same … not even close to time zero..true sx70 film has never been made by impossible/new Polaroid…
