Does the Polaroid Flip Solve Polaroid’s Problems?

Polaroid

The Polaroid Flip seems like a really great option for someone looking for a solid Polaroid camera that isn’t quite as high end as the Polaroid I-2. I ordered one, and I’m excited to put it through its paces, but I wanted to give my first impressions in this bonus podcast episode!

  1. I've waited a while and the Polaroid flip hasn't got any cheaper so I chose the Polaroid now + gen 3 I totally understand the hype for the flip but I feel that the sonar auto focus could be hit or miss in some situations and also I prefer the look of the now (personally)

  2. I don't get the hype. Poloroid cameras have always produced poor quality, over exposed, blurry, murky images that look as if the camera was 25 feet from the subject. Is it that people are nostalgic for the crappy images they remember from 50 years ago, or is it because they love the magic of holding the image moments later? Please somebody tell me.

  3. This camera reminds me of the Polaroid one step I had In my younger days I used that camera until Polaroid went belly up and I couldn't get film anymore so this one I'll have give it a try so far I haven't heard anything bad about it beyond it's expected limitations also you only get 8 pictures per film cartridge it used to be 10 per cartridge

  4. I REALLY want this camera! and, the price of Polaroid film just detours me from it. Maybe someday if money doesn't matter for me. But two+ dollars a shot? ;*(

  5. I love your videos. I’m new to Polaroid but not new to photography. I just purchased my first Polaroid camera, the Polaroid Flip. Yeah!!! FYI, I connected my camera with the Polaroid app and noticed that there was a firmware update. The newest Flip update appears to be (version 1.0.5). I did the update and everything seems fine, no issues before, either. The curiosity sent me to the web to find out what the update entailed. No mention anywhere of what was addressed in the newest 1.0.5 release. Does anybody have the information? Thank you. I figured Double Negative and the community would know where to find the firmware bulletin.

  6. This was a good listen, interesting to hear your perspective with the I2 (I never grabbed one) Also re your thoughts on glass and autofocusing are true of sonar as well (as far as I know/tested with the spectra cameras) Not to be an 'uhm actually' but because polaroid film is expensive. Save yourself a frame on that test lol, cheers.

  7. I have already seen Polaroid I-2 cameras sell pretty consistently for $400 on ebay and if you get really lucky you can find them for $300 from photographers who hate Polaroid n just wanna get rid of it.

  8. TBH half of me wants this camera because it is SUCH an improvement to my Now+, but I can either buy this or I can buy the Instax Wide I was actually saving for, and I think that is going to win since Instax film doesn't feel like a science experiment that failed

  9. You're going to have the same issues focusing through glass. Sonar just uses sound to do the same thing the lidar is doing. It sees how long it takes for sounds it makes to bounce off something and return. Though, the guy from the "In an Instant" YouTube channel said, you can connect it to the app to set the focus manually as a work around. Not ideal, I'd rather not have to do that. But it's probably one of the few times you'd need to use the app.

In other scenarios, I am curious about how it will focus compared to lidar. Lidar uses a laser, or a narrow beam of light that is able to focus on a point. Sound may spread in more of a cone shape, so it's capturing more in its path.

  10. I saw some pictures taken on the flip and thought the same thing! It seems to expose way better than the i2! I love my i2 but this is sooo tempting.
    Thanks for the video!

  11. I am very excited about this camera I have been lusting after a I-2 but a bit expensive the price has gone back up when I looked this morning. This looks like a good tool to improve my photography at a good price

  12. I really like what I have seen/heard about this camera! But I can’t even imagine how frustrating turning the flash off before EACH shot is going to be.

  13. I’m really excited for this! Ordered one of each for my wife and I.
The sonar system is essentially the same as the LiDAR in principle, the difference is that the medium used to measure the distance is sound instead of light.
You’ll find the sonar will have most of (if not all) the same drawbacks as the LiDAR (I know this as an i2 owner and Impulse AF owner)
